I’m proud to be LEBANESE…

January 28, 2009

Last night I stayed till 1:30 am watching May Chidiac talk show ” With all courage ” means in arabic ” be kol jor2a ” . The show was about the Lebanese achievements outside Lebanon highlighting some personalities that made a big difference in their field. It’s something that really makes you feel proud that your country is on the top list wherever you go. I heard names for the first time that have done great achievments in their resident countries. Since ages Lebanese people have migrated to all the continents of the world searching for their goals. Not to mention those who stayed in Lebanon too and also made a difference such as Jubran Khalil Jubran, Fairouz , Sabah, May Ziadeh..and many more. Last night show hosted four well known characters each in their field. Starting with Lina Mroueh, the daughter of the famous journalist Kamel Mroueh. Lina is the owner of Lina’s Sandwich worldwide. She started in France where she resides 20 years ago with a small restaurant. Now she owns a chain of more than 50 restaurants worldwide. She came back to Lebanon last year for good.

Elissa, one of the famous Lebanese singers locally and international. Winning the World Music Awards twice mader her a world star. Not to mention the ads she made for Pepsi, Samsung and other companies. Her fame is growing so fast.

Ricardo Karam, one of the best talk shows presenter , he had the opportunity to host so many world stars and successful people each in their field in his special program. Some personalities he interviewed were Carlos Ghosn, Reem Accra, Omar Al Sharif, Farah Diba, Nicolas Hayek…and many more.

The last guest was Rony Seikaly, famous NBA player who is also Lebanese. Rony started his career in 1993 and became one of the best basketball players in the NBA league. He also has his group of companies.

So many names were highlighted yesterday that I haven’t heard of. You can’t imagine the achievements that were done. Some of the names that caught my attention was Michel Obeid, a researcher in London, who’s considered one of the brillaint minds in the world. He’s within the 1000 greatests minds in the 20th century. His experiments made him discover a medicine that will make a miracle in cancer. Other names were known also such as Carlos Slim, the world’s second billionaire, Rafic Al Hariri, Nicolas Hayek ” Swatch Owner” Jack Nasr ” Ford presiden” , Carlos Ghosn ” Nissan and Renault president “, Octavia Nasr ” CNN reporter ” …Elie Saab ” famous fashion designer ” …Ray Lahoud ” Ministry of Transport in the States ” recently appointed by Obama…Charles Ashi ” Nasa president ” . And many more names.

It’s really amazing how a small country like Lebanon with all what it passed through from wars is still generating creative minds, people that have ambitions. And as what Rony Seikaly said last night , if you have a dream follow it and work hard on achieving your goals. Remember opportunity might come once only.

Sorry for the long post, but this really made me feel super happy to hear about how many fellow citizens we have abroad shining like stars each in their respective field.

I’ll end my post with a saying for Jubran ” Don’t wait for  your country to give you, but work on what you will give your country instead “

Lush Lush Lush…

January 25, 2009

lush-unwrapped-soaps

It’s all about Lush!! The first time I knew about this shop was during my last visit to the States. We were in Universal Studios when my cousin wanted to buy some soap and do facial treatment. I was amazed when I entered the place. The smell, color and arrangement of the soap was just wow. I wished that we had such a place in Kuwait. But wait, it was recently I knew that there is Lush in Kuwait. So I had to go and see. At the first instance, I recalled what I saw in the States although it’s different than here but having such a shop in Kuwait is really worth it. And since then I’m a normal customer at Lush. My favorites is Sultana soap. This week I got ” Oh la la ” and ” The Godmother ” . You better try them.

Have a nice day everyone!

This is the first time I hear about a singer called Lady Gaga. I was listening to one of her song ” Just Dance ” like a week ago and it really caught my attention knowing that the song was released in Aug 2008 in her latest album fame. Upon doing some research on Lady Gaga, I found out she’s American born in NYand having Italian roots, only 22 years old, her interests lies mainly in electronic music. She’s inspired by great artists such as Queen, David Bowie, Madonna, Michael Jackson and etc… I dunno how many of you know her.

Carlos Slim takes 17% of NY times…

January 21, 2009

As per Bloomberg site, the world’s 3rd billionaire Carlos Slim a mexican tycoon in the media business gives a loan for $ 250 million to New York times which gives a temporary breathing room for the Sulzberger family to rearrange their plans and structure their debts. According to Bloomberg, the company has $ 400 million credit line which will be due in May with an annual interest of $ 35 million which puts a big burden on them. Especially that advertising sales has dropped down, the shares also went down and dividends were reduced. With this investment, Mr.Slim will have a 17% stake in the company making him the second biggest shareholder after the Sulzberger family. It’s really sad to see how big companies are falling without the intervention of the government. How many Carlos Slim we need to end the crisis of the big companies in the absence of our governments???

Kuwait Economic Summit 2009…

January 21, 2009

top_agenda

Well now that the summit is over and everyone has gone back to his country. Let’s see what are the actions expected to be implemented in the near future. I don’t put high hopes on Arab summits because most of them just play on our feelings. Although I heard from press that it was a success and transformation to a higher level of relations between Arab states not to mention the economic part . Saudi Arabia knew how to play  the game well and reinforce its power as one of the leading Arab countries in decision makers. Hope their efforts will not go for granted. Regarding the generous donations by them and Kuwait for the Gaza crisis is very normal. Both countries are well known when it comes to donations. They’ve helped many countries before including Lebanon during the past wars and they are still donating. However, let’s take Kuwait as an example, one of the richest countries in the world still having a bad health and education system. Isn’t this bad?? Why public hospitals should be crap? Why public schools should be a bad place for the young generations to learn? Where is the freedom of speech? What is being done for the talented Kuwaitis? I guess there are many questions without answers.

Obama 44th US President…

January 20, 2009

Barrack Hussein Obama was sworn in today as the 44th US president and 1st Black president ever to rule the US. Tremedous crowds attended the inauguration as well as artists such as Beyonce,Shakira,Stevie Wonder….etc. Well he came to power in a very very critical timing due to the huge economic turmoil that affected all countries mainly the US which is suffering from trillions of dollars in debt. This is what George Bush handed him as a gift. Personally, he will not do anything to revive the economy from paralysis. We’ll wait and see what plans he has to offer to his people and to the world.

One touch card…

January 20, 2009

barclay20card20oysterRecently Barclays Bank in UK launched a credit card that works with one touch only. This sounded weird to me at the beginning but upon reading the features of the card I was amazed by the smart idea behind this credit card. A short brief on how it works.

- First of all, select the items you want to buy.

- Then if total amount is less than 10 pounds just look for the one touch wave sign when paying and touch your card against the secure reader and your payment is made instantly.wave_symbol_small

The use of this card is safe and 100 % against fraud protection like a normal credit card. Actually it works as a normal credit card but also has the option of one touch payment. The purpose of launching such a card is to avoid the hassle of paying cash sometimes for smaller pruchases when you actually don’t hold enough cash or you don’t like to hold smaller amounts in your pocket.

Don’t eat Peanut Butter…

January 20, 2009

peter-pan-peanut-butter

I guess everyone is hearing about the salmonella outbreak in the states which was discovered in peanut butter and other products that contain peanut butter. This is really serious because several cases were reported not to mention that some people are dying too.More peanut butter products have been recalled in the United States after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers not to eat anything made with peanut butter because of a salmonella outbreak.

Federal health officials on Saturday urged consumers to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream and other foods that contain peanut butter until the authorities can learn more about a deadly outbreak of salmonella contamination. So far, more than 470 people have gotten sick in 43 states, and at least 90 have to be hospitalized. At least six deaths are being blamed on the outbreak. Salmonella is a bacteria and the most common source of food poisoning in the U.S., causing diarrhea, cramping and fever. Even Kelloggs announced it is recalling as a precaution about 33,000 cases of cookies, and 7 million cases of crackers from grocery shelves.

So all peanut butter lovers including myself will be deprived for a shortwhile till this issue is cleared…:(
